Phakathi inside — Joanna Holewa Chrona
Joanna Holewa Chrona’s first solo work, Phakathi Inside, is a solo journey — a return to the inner body and the power within us. The piece moves through physical and spiritual landscapes and the manifestation of an avatar — an embodied force taking physical form on stage. The name Phakathi Inside is South African slang, blending isiZulu and English, meaning “Inside Inside.” With the music in this work, Joanna continues her long-standing engagement and exchange with South African artists and culture, which began in 2015. The piece features South African-inspired electronic music with lyrics in isiXhosa by singer Ntsika Fana Ngxanga. Joanna Holewa Chrona is a Swedish dancer, choreographer, project leader, and DJ, working in Sweden and South Africa, and now touring internationally. Her practice is inspired both technically and conceptually by Afro-American dance styles such as popping, hip hop, and house, as well as folk dances like isiPantsula, Sabar, and Afro-Cuban styles from South Africa, Senegal, and Cuba. In recent years, she has devoted significant time to developing her own practice, Slowmotion Practice. Holewa Chrona also works in the duo LAND BEFORE TIME together with Yared Tilahun Cederlund. They presented their first work, [...it is contained in...], at MDT in spring 2022, which later developed into a new piece called Waterkind. In 2025, Waterkind was selected by the European network Aerowaves as part of their Twenty25 artists.
