About the Event

One of the most groundbreaking voices in Swedish music comes to Palladium in Malmö. Since the 1960s, Merit Hemmingson has created a musical universe entirely her own, where folk music, jazz, groove and experimental sounds come together in a distinctive style that has helped shape Swedish music history. Age limit: All ages welcome! The Salon Doors: 6:40 PM | Show starts: 7:00 PM Running time: 90 minutes, including an interval Bars in the Marble Foyer and Gold Foyer open: 6:00 PM Merit Hemmingson is a composer, arranger, organist and singer from Jämtland. She has devoted her life to exploring and shaping her own musical landscape, bending and challenging genres in ways that have often sent ripples through the music world. Since the 1960s, her distinctive sound has carved out a unique place in Swedish music history, bringing together jazz, groove rock and, above all, folk music. In autumn 2026, a new album, Pekkos Per å Jag, will be released, and Merit will head out on tour with her band. Pekkos Per (1807–1877) is a legendary figure in Swedish folk music. For Merit Hemmingson, he has been a constant source of inspiration. She has now recorded a selection of Pekkos Per’s music in a new interpretation that is at once familiar and unmistakable, yet swirling, inspired and exploratory. “For me, Pekkos Per from Bingsjö in Dalarna has always been one of the absolute giants of Swedish folk music,” says Merit Hemmingson. “Many of his tunes move between major and minor, which I find both challenging and fascinating. “The tunes have traditionally been played mostly by fiddlers, but I wanted to present them in a different and unconventional way, using my favourite instrument, the Hammond B3.” The album was recorded at Sandkvie Studio on Gotland with musicians including Juan Romero, Sara Parkman, Mats Edén, Ola Winkler and Mattias Bärjed, and produced by Anton Sundell. A first taste of the album will arrive before summer, followed by the full album, Pekkos Per å Jag, in early autumn via Supertraditional Records.
